Redevelopment of the former Glidden site in Reading hit two major milestones this month. A little over a year after acquiring the old Glidden site, Shuman Development Group, in partnership with BerksIDA, was granted preliminary land development approval for its design on ~13 acres of the 20-acre site.
The plan calls for a 156,000 square foot shopping center on the lower portion of the property, made up of six retail buildings. Preliminary approval is an important step in the process, as most of the major land reuse is determined at this stage. The next step is final land development approval, at which point the project can officially break ground.
In addition to receiving preliminary land development approval this month, DEP approved the cleanup of the site and allowed for the capping of the monitoring wells. This capping means the site has been completely stabilized and requires no additional action until we construct the shopping plaza and remaining acreage at the site.
The remaining acreage is actively under negotiations with an additional developer. Stay tuned!
